The Sam Bencheikh Memorial Cup

Tranmere Rovers Footbal in the Community Team will be working in conjunction with Wirral Borough Council’s Sports Development Unit to organise a programme of events for people with disabilities.

Coaching sessions throughout the autumn will conclude with two competitions - one for adults with learning disabilities and one for children with special needs.

The winners of each competition will be awarded The Sam Bencheikh Memorial Trophy by Sam’s parents.

Tournament Takes Place

On Thursday December 2nd 2004, children from four special schools took part in the Sam Bencheikh Memorial Cup tournament run by the Tranmere Rovers Football in the Community Programme Team. Held at the Grange Road West Sports Centre in Birkenhead, it turned out to be a great day with Gilbrook School winning the hard fought competition.

9th February, Grange Road West Sports Centre, Birkenhead

Pupils from Lindale Special School (Eastham) and Stanley Special School (Thingwall) were invited to participate in a football extraveganza which consisted of a warm up, football skills session, fun games and races before the children took a well earned drinks break. The scene was then set for the big game. All of the children were really excited as the game commenced and what a game it turned out to be with some fantastic goals flying in and no shortage of enthusiasm and endeavour on show. Although we all lost count of the goals tally a draw seemed like a fair result at the end keeping everyone happy in the process.

The morning finished with every child receiving a memorial certificate and commemorative medal for taking part in a memorable morning.

It was great to see so many children smiling and enjoying themselves at an event made possible by kind donations to the memorial fund. Thank You to all concerned.

I would also like to thank the Community staff Shirley, Louise & Dave for their endeavours on the day and also to Dawn Tolcher for helping the event run so smoothly.

The next memorial event will be for children who attend Special needs High Schools. This will follow an extensive programme of coaching in the schools.
